This story forms part of a series featuring the 22 entrepreneurs who participated in the 2025 Ranyaka Building Business (RBB) programme in Polokwane, Limpopo, and their journeys towards building stronger, more sustainable businesses.

RBB forms part of the overarching Nedbank Proud of My Town (PoMT) initiative, which is implemented nationally by Ranyaka. Nedbank’s total investment of R320,500 (amounting to just over R14,500 per entrepreneur) covered practical business training, compliance support, branding guidance, professional photography and pitching development, helping participants strengthen and formalise their businesses. Graduates also participated in Nedbank-led financial literacy sessions.

Today, we share the story of Tebogo Moremi from Primo Poultry in Limpopo province.

Beyond poultry
For Tebogo Moremi, farming has never been just about raising chickens. It’s about creating opportunities, strengthening rural communities, and proving that agriculture can be a pathway to economic growth and self-reliance.

As the founder of Primo Poultry, based in Mookgophong, Limpopo, Tebogo has turned her passion for agriculture into a thriving poultry business that supplies live broilers and six-week-old slaughter-ready chickens to resellers, caterers and stokvel groups across Mookgophong, Mokopane and Modimolle.

A calling rooted in purpose
Although Tebogo studied Mechanical Engineering and later pursued a Bachelor of Information Science, she always knew her future lay in agriculture.

Growing up, she witnessed many talented young people in her community struggling to find employment. At the same time, she recognised that chicken remained one of South Africa’s most sought-after protein sources. That combination inspired her to establish Primo Poultry in May 2021 — not simply to earn an income, but to one day create jobs and contribute to food security in rural communities.

“Tebogo’s story reminds us that entrepreneurship is about more than building a business. It’s about creating hope and opportunity for others too. The ambition to create jobs and strengthen food security shows how Proud of My Town supports people seeing potential in their communities and choosing to do something with it. One person’s determination can create opportunities for many others.” – Jehaan Anthony (Head: Staff Volunteerism and Advocacy at Nedbank’s Social Impact Unit)

Every morning begins with gratitude
Tebogo’s day starts long before most people are awake. After preparing her young daughter for crèche, she heads straight to the chicken house. Her routine is meticulous: opening the coop, washing drinkers, providing fresh water and feed, recording daily mortality, replacing wet bedding and checking on the health of every bird. Throughout the day she regularly monitors the flock, before returning in the evening to feed them again with her daughter by her side.

One part of her routine stands out above all else: every morning she greets her chickens and offers a prayer of gratitude for the business she believes God has entrusted to her.

Learning through every challenge
Like many entrepreneurs, Tebogo’s journey has not been without setbacks.

Operating from a backyard facility limits her production to around 1,000 chickens at a time, making it difficult to meet growing customer demand. She also admits that when she first entered the poultry industry, she underestimated the importance of research and understanding the impact of factors such as climate on livestock production.

Those early lessons shaped her approach to business and reinforced the importance of planning, continuous learning and staying connected to her purpose.

Growing through the RBB Programme
Participating in the Ranyaka Building Business (RBB) Programme, funded by Nedbank, has helped Tebogo strengthen the foundations of her business.

One of the biggest shifts has been understanding the value of branding. Through the programme, she recognised that a business is more than a name, but also the identity and message it communicates to customers.

The programme also strengthened her financial management practices. She now keeps her personal and business finances separate, allowing her to make better financial decisions and build a more sustainable enterprise.

Looking beyond her own success
Tebogo’s ambitions extend far beyond expanding her own business.

Her long-term vision is to acquire land, increase production capacity and build a network of rural poultry entrepreneurs who work together to create jobs, strengthen local food systems and improve food security across their communities.

She believes South Africa’s future depends on empowering local farmers to produce at scale, reducing reliance on imports while creating meaningful employment opportunities for young people. As Tebogo explains: “I believe that small businesses are crucial to the wellbeing of our country’s economy… their contribution extends far beyond their size, making them indispensable to the nation’s economic health.”

With determination, faith and a clear vision for the future, Tebogo Moremi is proving that building a successful business can also mean building stronger communities, one chicken, one customer and one opportunity at a time.
