In the complex landscape of community development, where challenges are many and solutions rarely simple, Ranyaka remains steadfast in our purpose. We are here to do the work. It is often complicated, emotional, and nuanced. But it is vital.

Clear and consistent partnerships are essential to our work, especially in how we engage with government structures, municipalities, and community leaders. We want to take this opportunity to clearly share who we work with and why.

The Ranyaka team is made up of passionate community champions, skilled networkers and bridge-builders who know how to forge partnerships rooted in a shared goal: transforming the livelihoods of our communities for the better.

We work with people, not political parties
At Ranyaka, we do not align ourselves with any political party or religious affiliation. Our commitment is to the community and its wellbeing, not to any ideology or agenda. We bring together diverse stakeholders across political divides to focus on a common goal: transformation that benefits everyone.

Whether a local leader represents Party A, B, or C, our role is to engage constructively. We engage practically and purposefully, not politically or emotionally. If someone holds influence and can help remove barriers or unlock resources for the community, we work with them.

Our DNA mapping sessions bring together leaders from across sectors and focus areas to engage in meaningful dialogue around the most pressing issues in their communities. The municipality plays a key role as a stakeholder, with many of our indicators aligning closely with municipal mandates.

The importance of engaging municipalities
Municipalities are public institutions, not political parties. They are the stewards of infrastructure, budgets, safety plans, and local development strategies, the very systems that communities rely on. We engage with municipalities intentionally, because they hold the keys to resources our communities need.

At Ranyaka, we participate in meetings, ask tough questions, build trust, and hold space for civil society, the private sector, and community members to be heard. Our goal is not to replace government but to support the development process and ensure that community voices have a seat at the table.

The CoCreate Hub is an example of a successful partnership with the Stellenbosch Municipality. Ranyaka was awarded a tender to transform an underutilised building into a vibrant entrepreneurial hub, now home to around 30 entrepreneurs who have a dedicated space to trade their products and services.

Rooted in a place-based, people-centered approach
Our work is rooted in a place-based and citizen-led framework. We believe transformation happens when communities activate their own strength and self-organise around shared goals. This approach allows for sustainable development that is aligned with the unique DNA of each town or township.

We facilitate workshops like DNA mapping and support local action groups, always with a holistic development plan in mind. We explore innovative technology and provide the backroom support needed to empower communities to drive change themselves.

A message from our CEO, Sithembiso Malevu

“Navigating South Africa’s socio-political landscape can feel overwhelming. Yet at Ranyaka, we see a different story every day — a story of hope and resilience. We witness a new generation of entrepreneurs and change agents who embody the power of active citizenry and collective action.”

“Our team of urban planners and community development specialists has seen how powerful it is when policy, planning, platforms, skilled support, and engaged citizens come together. This synergy fuels real transformation.”

“We are grateful to collaborate with a broad network of partners — from government to private sector to civil society.

Special thanks to investors like Nedbank and their Proud of my Town initiative, which has enabled us to work in 28 communities across 12 towns and cities in eight provinces.”

At our core, Ranyaka believes in the strength and resilience of communities. We are committed to walking this path alongside the people we serve, step by step, hand in hand, toward a better, more hopeful future.

Why this matters
Transformation cannot happen in silos. It cannot thrive in fear, division, or silence. Real progress requires meeting in the messy, uncomfortable middle where diverse people come together with a shared purpose. We have often been in spaces where there was tension, but once we push through that tension, the magic that happens is tangible.

At Ranyaka, we are here for the long game, rooted in purpose, anchored in people, and focused on progress that benefits communities, not egos or headlines.

Our open door
We welcome anyone committed to improving the lives of others, regardless of political or religious background. Our door is always open for collaborators who share our heart for this work and respect for people.

Lasting change happens when communities are supported to lead. Through shared commitment and trust, we can help amplify what already works.

Thank you for walking this journey with us.
