“In my kitchen, I create more than just sandwiches – I craft experiences. Every ingredient, every spice, every layer is a deliberate attempt to tantalise your taste buds and leave you craving for more.” – Boikanyo Tirelo
Boikanyo’s Kitchen, nestled in the heart of Boitekong Extension 2, is a hub of what he calls township culinary innovation. This is where the sandwich king, Boikanyo Tirelo, weaves his magic, combining premium ingredients to create the ultimate dagwood sandwich experience.
“I make sandwiches for a living, but not just any sandwich. Our dagwood sandwiches are packed with flavour and fresh ingredients,” says Boikanyo. “I’m not just a sandwich maker; I’m a flavour engineer. I take pride in my craft, and my goal is to make every bite a memorable one.”
Unique flavour, exciting journey
Boikanyo’s journey began under the guidance of his aunt, who initially started the business. He honed his skills, learned the craft, and eventually decided to venture out on his own, naming the business after himself. “My aunt taught me the basics, but I’ve added my own twist to the recipe. I’ve experimented with different ingredients and spices to create a unique flavour profile that sets us apart.”
Boikanyo’s story is one of resilience and determination. Growing up in a disadvantaged home, he witnessed his father’s entrepreneurial spirit firsthand, selling fatcakes to make ends meet. This instilled in him a strong work ethic and a desire to succeed. “My father’s hustle inspired me to work hard and never give up. I saw how he turned a simple idea into a sustainable business, and that motivated me to do the same.”
Despite facing challenges like slow business and unpaid orders, Boikanyo remains motivated by the ever-evolving food industry and the pursuit of excellence. “The food industry is constantly changing, and I need to stay ahead of the curve. I follow food trends, attend workshops, and experiment with new ingredients to stay relevant.”
Building a business
Through the Nedbank-funded Ranyaka Building Business programme, Boikanyo gained valuable insights and mentorship, helping him navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship. “The programme was a game-changer for me. I learned how to manage my finances, market my business, and comply with regulations. It’s helped me grow as an entrepreneur and take my business to the next level,” says Boikanyo. “I’m eager to learn as much as I can to differentiate myself from my competitors.”
His dedication to innovation and quality has earned him a loyal customer base, all craving that signature flavour explosion. “My customers are my biggest motivation. I love seeing them enjoy my sandwiches and hearing their feedback. It’s what drives me to keep pushing the boundaries of flavour and creativity.”
As you take a bite of Boikanyo’s dagwood sandwich, you experience that perfect balance of flavours and textures. The secret? “I put my heart and soul into every sandwich I make. I want every bite to be a flavour experience that leaves a lasting impression,” Boikanyo says with a smile. “I’m not just selling sandwiches; I’m selling memories. I want my customers to remember the taste, the texture, and the experience of eating at Boikanyo’s kitchen.”
Boikanyo passion for his craft is contagious, making you want to be a part of the experience.
“I’m proud of what I’ve achieved, but I know there’s still room for growth. I want to expand my business, try new recipes, and explore new markets. The sky’s the limit, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me,” says Boikanyo. With his dedication to quality, innovation, and customer satisfaction, there’s no doubt that Boikanyo’s kitchen will continue to thrive and delight the taste buds of many.
