A splash of colour, creative energy and broad smiles greet visitors to Yeyethu Designer Studio – a fashion studio based in the Kuyasa community centre in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch.

We had the privilege of meeting the dynamic duo behind the studio at the product showcase for Stellenbosch entrepreneurs held in December last year. Bulelwa Tito and Lerato Mtiya are two of the 15 entrepreneurs who were identified to participate in a one-week entrepreneurship course presented by Labit Academy later this month.

Bulelwa’s sewing career was kickstarted upon completion of a sewing course with the Zimela Foundation in 2013 whilst Lerato graduated from the Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion Design in Stellenbosch in 2015.

Together, they create products ranging from custom-designed outfits for individual clients to soft toys and key rings. Vibrant African fabrics like Shwe Shwe, Java and Umbhaco are the most popular choices, but they even create outfits from Sotho blankets.

They also offer training to women from Kayamandi. A one-year course covers two modules – the first focuses on basic sewing skills, whilst module two dives into the creative side of design. The first intake of ten women will complete their training this year. This is made possible by sponsorships.

For more information or to place an order, contact Bulelwa on 073 511 2033. You can also get involved by sponsoring a trainee for a year!
