Humble beginnings proved to be no obstacle in the entrepreneurial journey of Samkela “Teddy” Mhlakaza. Today, Samkela is the Managing Director of Kasilam Wear, a clothing company based in Kayamandi township in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. With his warm, friendly, and gentle demeanor, Samkela embodies a generosity of spirit that shines through every aspect of his business.
Inspired by his mother’s entrepreneurial spirit, Samkela’s connection to entrepreneurship started early in life. Kasilam Wear emerged as a dream to foster community pride through custom apparel, starting with T-shirts celebrating Kayamandi. Their first creation, featuring the wording “I love Kayamandi,” was a hit, leading to the official birth of Kasilam Wear, with Samkela and his partner, Esethu Bangaza, each investing R500.
The initial success encouraged more custom orders and on-demand printing, especially from schools, churches, and businesses. Over time, Kasilam Wear broadened its product line and extended its presence from Kayamandi to nearby areas and across the country. Despite challenges in their supply chain, including the loss of a key supplier which led to a 10-month halt in operations, Samkela and Esethu learned and grew from each obstacle.
The Nedbank-funded Ranyaka Building Business programme has played a significant role in Kasilam Wear‘s journey, ensuring business compliance and providing the guidance needed to steer the business in the right direction. One of their proudest achievements has been developing systems to keep detailed sales records and conducting monthly checks to ensure the business’ financial health and meet compliance standards.
Small business owners often find it difficult to juggle their personal and work life. Samkela advises, “Do not be too hard on yourself, adapt to changes, and accept guidance from experienced peers.” For those aiming to start businesses, especially in apparel and branding, Samkela recommends thorough research and staying focused. He warns against rushing into too many different things too quickly.
Although he faces his fair share of challenges, Samkela loves owning a small business. He especially enjoys engaging with his customers. While the entrepreneurial journey can feel lonely at times, the connections and community it creates make it worthwhile for him. It is clear that he deeply cares about his community. His business journey, while focused on marketing and branding, is powered predominantly by his commitment to the place he calls home. Looking ahead, he hopes to expand his product offerings to reach more communities within South Africa while also creating much-needed employment opportunities.
Stellenbosch is one of 31 communities in 8 provinces across South Africa where Ranyaka is implementing the Nedbank Proud of my Town programme. Building Business is one of 10 programmes that forms part of the Ranyaka and PoMT framework.
