Can engineers be social innovators?
This was the question we posed to a group of 200 students at the Stellenbosch University‘s Engineering Faculty today.
Ranyaka’s Marli Goussard and Johan Olivier co-presented a lecture addressing the pressing need for engineers to play their part in shaping a flourishing society by adopting a people-centered approach and becoming social innovators within their respective fields of specialisation.
The lecture forms part of a series presented to the faculty’s fourth-year students and will include a field trip to the community of Klapmuts next week.
Here students will be introduced first-hand to design challenges that also present great opportunities to improve areas such as transportation, safety, alternative stormwater management systems and technology solutions.
