PROUD OF MY TOWN
Nedbank’s Proud of my Town programme is a first of its kind for corporate South Africa. This holistic community transformation initiative was launched in 2016 and forms part of Nedbank’s ongoing commitment to the well-being and positive socio-economic development of all South Africans.

OBJECTIVES
The programme’s objectives align with the four main outcomes of Ranyaka’s Collaborative Community Development model, namely the creation of a society that is:

HEALTHY, EDUCATED AND ACTIVE

PRODUCTIVE AND EMPLOYED

SAFE, CLEAN AND ATTRACTIVE

SOCIALLY COHESIVE
APPROACH
PoMT pursues these four outcomes through the development of integrated transformation strategies for specific, geographically demarcated areas. Here, the PoMT implementation team works in partnership with local change agents to implement programmes that support the above-mentioned four outcomes.
Key to the success of the programme are, amongst others, the fact that:
-
Projects and programmes are never tackled in isolation, but rather align with the area’s over-arching strategy, as well as the relevant legislation and policies and take into consideration the broader eco-system within which challenges and opportunities exist.
-
Project teams require a deep understanding of local context and on-the-ground realities so that interventions are targeted to meet actual needs and not only involve local communities in this process, but equip them to become drivers of change
-
Authentic engagement and the building of deep-rooted relationships with communities and local stakeholders involved in socio-economic initiatives in those towns is critical.
PROUD OF MY TOWN ALIGNS WITH NEDBANK’S COMMITMENT TO SEEING MONEY DIFFERENTLY AND A DESIRE TO BE KNOWN AS MONEY EXPERTS WHO DO GOOD – FOR INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, BUSINESS AND SOCIETY AND DELIVERS ON THE BANK’S CORPORATE COMMITMENT TO THE UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS.
PROUD OF MY TOWN FUND
In 2017, Nedbank also launched its Proud of my Town fund to support specific programmes identified as priority issues within the demarcated areas where the PoMT programme is being implemented.
In every town where Proud of my Town is being implemented, a percentage of Nedbank’s primary clients’ transactional fees contributes (at no cost to the client) directly to initiatives that form part of the programme in that specific town.
WHERE IT ALL STARTED
Ranyaka’s partnership with Nedbank dates back to 2014 when the bank came on board as the primary funder of a pilot project that had been initiated by the urban planning social enterprise in 2012. Ranyaka’s vision was to co-create a sustainable, citizen-led development strategy for the town of Magaliesburg, Gauteng. Thanks to the buy-in from local stakeholders and the ongoing support of Nedbank through the Proud of my Town programme, the Magalies Development Initiative (MDI) is still going strong and continues to testify to the immense power of active citizenry and the commitment of local heroes to transform their communities.
Today, Ranyaka Community Transformation is the official implementation agent for the Nedbank Proud of my Town programme.
